The American elections are over (thank goodness!) and whether we like it or not, democracy has spoken and Donald Trump has won.  Here in New Zealand, or any where else in the world that isn’t US territory, we couldn’t influence the outcome and we certainly can’t change the result!

So don’t let what may or may not happen in the next four years slow you down from achieving your own personal financial goals.

Sure, you need to be aware of local and world affairs and 2016 has given us a lot to think about; ISIS on the rampage, refugees pouring into Europe, the massive earthquake in Italy, then there’s Brexit and the Donald Trump surprise.  And now much closer to home, the earthquake in and around central New Zealand and the devastation that brings.

As an individual (or family), we can’t control the outcome of those world events, but what we can take control over is our own backyard and how we respond to those events that directly affect us.

It is how you respond to an event that will determine the outcome for you.

Don’t worry about events you personally can’t control, for example, the Jones have a new car, the Smiths are taking a European holiday – again.  Have a look at your own choices and the events going on in your own life and how you can respond to them differently.

Focus on what you can control.

You can decide whether you want to spend that salary bonus or use that windfall from dear Aunty Meg on frivolous ‘wants’, rather than pay off some of your mortgage – or even investing in your retirement fund!

You can’t control the interest rate on your mortgage, but you can talk to your bank about different options for repaying it off more quickly.  Or you could choose to divert money spent on lifestyle to your mortgage.

You can’t control mother nature and prevent another earthquake, but you can donate time, money, food and clothing to a charity to help those who have been effected.

We can spend far too much time and energy worrying about things we can’t change and not enough on what we can and then doing something about it.

Think of the things you can change.  Think of them as mornings, when everything is fresh and an entire day of opportunity awaits all of us.

Focus on what you can control.
